Welcome to the Support pages which gives you access to various resources designed to help ICT professionals and 'IT savvy' teachers to get Lucid software installed and working, to fix it if it breaks and to update to the latest software versions.
Please ensure you know how our networked software is deployed, both on the server and workstations. Have a look at the 3 Installation Guides found on the CD - these have been carefully written with lots of screen pictures to help you.
GUIDE 1 - Installation Guide for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express
GUIDE 2 - Installation Guide for the application on the server
GUIDE 3 - Installation Guide for the thin client msi on workstations
Determine whether you need to install a new instance of MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Edition or whether you wish to use an existing instance of SQL Server.
Lucid's networked software usually comes with a copy of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express ® Edition [32 bit only] (supplied free by courtesy of Microsoft ® ). This also includes SQL Server Management Studio which is a very useful tool which offers an easy to use user interface into the database itself. This also includes SQL Server Management Studio which is a very useful tool which offers an easy to use user interface into the database itself. If you don’t find it on your Lucid CD you can freely download it from Microsoft at this web-link: SQL Server 2008 R2 Express downloadFor the 32 bit edition please download: SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exeFor the 64 bit edition please download: SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exeWhen you install MS SQL Server on your server the installer also installs the correct edition of the SQL Native Client driver which allows communication between the Lucid application and the SQL database. This driver MUST also be installed onto every workstation which uses the Lucid application. Both 32 bit and 64 bit editions of the driver SQL Server Native Client 10.0 can be found on the Lucid CD in the folders named: SQLNCLx32 and SQLNCLx64.You can also obtain the drivers from Microsoft at the link below:SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client official downloadAfter going to this link click on ‘Install Instructions’ and then scroll down to about half way down the web page to find the heading Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Native Client. If you already have an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server on your server configured to use Mixed Mode Authentication and which is not used for a critical process such as schools management, backups or security, you may be able to use it to host the Lucid database instead of installing the free Express Edition supplied. The installation tools Lucid provide will deploy and attach the SQL Database files (.MDF and .LDF) and will automatically set up a User and Login account. The software uses a 'thin client' deployment in which the application itself is only installed once, on a server. Shortcuts from workstations point to one or two application 'exe' files in a share which you create on the server.
The software reads and writes to a Microsoft SQL Server database (see below). Workstations need two small msi packages to be installed:
(1) A small MSI file containing system files required by the application.
(2) An SQL Native Client driver that matches that required by your SQL Server.
If you do not install both these components on your workstations you are likely to encounter Runtime errors when you run the software.
If you don't have the same SQL native client driver on your workstations as the one used by your SQL Server you will encounter connectivity errors when you run your Lucid software!
MS SQL Server 2005 uses the driver called SQL Native Client
MS SQL Server 2008 uses SQL Server Native Client 10.0
MS SQL Server 2012 uses SQL Server Native Client 11.0
Please look at our TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE (for SQL Server) which may help if you are getting connectivity issues or runtime errors when running your Lucid application from a workstation or from the server.
- Know your SQL Server system admin ('sa') password.
- Know which server and/or SQL Server instance hosts your Lucid product's database.
- Have SQL Server Management Studio available to view our database.
- Know your software serial number.
- Know the software version number (e.g. 6.04-N).
- Record any error messages you encounter.
For information about our software licences, please see Software licence Visit the Software updates page to download a patch for the latest software version.
